Vitus Mythique 27 VR review

The Mythique is the Brand New trail bike from Chain Reaction Cycles in house brand Vitus. With 130mm of travel front and back on a developed horst link 4 bar linkage this is a bike designed to handle a multitude of mtb duties.

The lowest priced version in the Mythique lineup offers unbeatable value with a RRP of just £1250 (currently available for just £999) and puts it at the absolute bargain basement of full suspension mountain bikes.

But is the Vitus Mythique a capable bike for a beginner? Looking at the component list we think so! Vitus have always offered exceptional value bikes with the Sommet and the Escarpe out performing bikes nearly double their respective values. The Vitus Mythique offers the same style suspension platform featured on the more expensive Escarpe with similar performance in kinematics.

With 130mm of travel you can be assured the bike will handle both XC and gravity orientated duties with aplomb. The X-Fusion forks and shock might not be the best suspension units, but we have gone a long long way from ‘budget’ suspension of the 2010’s – most beginner to intermediate riders will not feel much difference between these and more exotic brands such as Rock Shox and Fox. The bike is designed to get you out riding and enjoy mountain bike trail-centres and loops.

The Vitus suspension platform offers a good pedalling platform with minimal bob while climbing. If you have the rear shock set up correctly it should climb like a hard-tail when pedalling seated. No more excuses not to have a full suspension bike!!
Our review of the Vitus Mythique is based on 4 years of riding Vitus Bikes in the most gruelling of Peak District Terrain. We are talking long trail loops, loamy tracks, singletrack, downhill runs and canal paths – just every type of riding that a mountain bike should be capable of. The Vitus manages it all!

Even with its budget price the Vitus Mythique offer some real stand out components that would be at home on bikes costing loads more. The Schwalbe tyres are exceptional and you couldn’t ask for a better front tyre than the Magic Mary – used by many fast enduro riders.
Usually the first thing you would look to upgrade on a bike this price is the tyres – most bikes would come with the (frankly awful) WTB fast rolling tyres.
The Hans Dampf and Magic Mary are absolutely perfect!

The 10 Speed Shimano Deore drivetrain is a solid performer – although not a 1 x 11 speed offering, it still has a 11 to 46 rear cassette which will give you the same range as most older 11 speed sets – enabling you to ride up the steepest slopes.

The budget Shimano brakes will offer good stopping power, but at the bottom end of the market the heavier riders may find they want to upgrade to a more powerful brake later on. 180mm rotors are a nice touch, many biies at this price come with smaller 160mm rotors and the larger rotor size increases braking performance on longer descents.

WTB St i30 rims built onto Vitus own brand hubs look solid performers and the black spokes give the bike a lovely look.

Nukeproof contact points including bars and saddle are a lovely finish, great solid kit and something that shouldn’t require changing any time soon. At 800mm wide the bars offer a good width and a refreshing change from the days of stock handlebars being undersized.

Lovely finishing bits of a KMC chain and Across Headset with a Suntour BB means the Vitus Mythique hasn’t been overlooked or undersold in the parts you don’t see.

Head-tube angle of 66deg is perfect for the length of the bike and sit nicely with the travel – offering up-to-date geometry.

Weight is pretty good too at only 14.2kg – the will not be many bikes under £2500 that will be lighter.

The Vitus Mythique offers absolutely unbelievable value with a finishing kit found on bikes costing £600 more. The travel and geometry of the bike is suited to beginner and intermediate riders alike and will offer great stability and confidence on the steeps, slopes and climbs of the peak district and wales.

PROS:

Tyres are fantastic!
Groupset is unbeatable at this price.
180mm brake rotors.
Vitus suspension platform is fantastic and similar to the Escarpe and Sommet.
Vitus bike traditionally have good resale value.
Easy to source spares from CRC or Wiggle.
Nothing is better value!

Cons:
No dropper post at this price! – Thats your first upgrade if buying!
Paintwork is quite thin, will chip easily.
Finish on some shipped bikes can be a bit dodgy – cables too long and gears not indexed correctly.

Conclusion!!
After 4 years riding both the Escarpe and Sommet I would personally be more than happy to do a season on this Vitus Mythique. It will handle the best of UK riding with ease and with a few upgrades (like brakes and dropper) it will handle gravity duties as well as XC loops.
Beginners would feel absoultely perfect on this bike, while intermediate riders would require one or two upgrades to feel at home.
