Vitus Nucleus VR – Best Budget Lockdown Bike?

Vitus Nucleus VR – Best Budget Lockdown Bike?

As the UK goes crazy for mountain bikes during lockdown, this bargain Vitus offers fantastic value for a capable mountain bike to get you on the trails and out and about during lockdown. We think this is the best bike for under £600!

At this price point there isn’t much in the way of competition. Offerings from Voodoo and Boardman are specced with good OEM parts and components but offer poor frames, with outdated geometry and ill thought through platforms. If you want a bike to ride not only now but in the future, maybe an idea to steer clear of Halfords!
This is Vitus’ cheapest bike in their range and takes inspiration from its more expensive brethren, as a brand they are light years ahead of Halfords own brands like Voodoo and Boardman.

The Vitus comes with a solid groupset from Shimano Altus and hydraulic brakes from Tektro, nothing amazingly fancy in terms of brand but both competent and workable. 180mm front rotor is a nice little touch, for increased performance.

There is a choice of 27.5 wheels and 29 wheels. Personal preference and a simplified view but; 29″ wheels are more suited to a mix trail and road, 27.5″ wheels are more suited to fun, jump and skids. Your choice!

The Suntour suspension forks offer 120mm of travel and are air sprung. Suntour as a brand have come along way in the past 10 years and although they don’t have the same brand recognition as RockShox, these budget forks are more than a match for the budget RockShox models specced on equivalent bikes at this price range.

WTB wheel rims and Tyres are a nice spec. Wheels will manage quite a lot of abuse and the tyres are fine for path and trail. The tyres are possibly one area you may want to upgrade on, depending on what riding you are doing and what trails you are hitting. Schwalbe Magic Mary Bikepark tyres are a great upgrade for riders looking to do more serious off road duties.

Finishing kit on the Vitus looks tasty, with good sized Nukeproof Bars and nice Nukeproof Saddle, Vitus own brand stem is a good size and even the Vitus Grips are lock-on and won’t need an upgrade.

This is the perfect beginner bike and a fantastic bike to start your mtb adventure on. The frame offers a great base to upgrade on should your riding warrant it at a later date. Plus unlike some other brands Vitus are well respected in the mountain bike world and find good resale value should you want to sell on your bike in the future.

The Vitus is available for just £550  exclusively from CRC

Brand-X Ascend Dropper Seatpost Review

Brand-X Ascend Dropper Seatpost Review

Brand X Ascend Dropper Post – £89.99 (with 35% off)
After installation the morning it arrived I then went for an epic trail ride, climbing and descending in the muddy trails of derbyshire dales. Now this is the thing and the revelation, I wasnt expecting much from this budget dropper post but having previously used a Reverb for some time I am astounded that Brand X can produce a better product and retail it at less than half the price! I

Installing everything is easy peasy and quick, maybe a bit fiddly with the internal cable routing but as long as you follow the instructions included its no problem at all. You will need to cut the excess bit of inner cable or possibly outer too depending on bike size. There are no instructions included with the lever kit but installation is pretty much the same.

Triggering feels lighter than that of the reverb, but not too light that you don’t feel it. No annoying noises when the seat is actuated. That slight side to side saddle movement that seems inherent to dropper posts is present but is far less than on the reverb and the least I have ever come across. Seat offset is the same as on reverb so I didn’t feel to far forward or back. Feels much more solid and reassuring yet weighs much less and looks more subtle and stylish than the big money brands.

All in all an amazing product at an astounding price point. I feel this dropper is a real game changer in the market and has really raffled the feathers of the big names. About time too. The 1.5m cable was perfect for my Medium sized Sommet.

  • Pros:
  • low cost
  • solid quality materials yet light weight
  • easy to instal and maintain
  • hardly any saddle swivel inherent to droppers
  • insert measurement markings
  • easy operation
  • optional 2x and 3x kit
  • contemporary subtle stylingCons:
  • need more drop options for taller riders
  • need for longer cable
    Lever could be improved.

Top 5 – Flat Pedals

Top 5 – Flat Pedals

In no particular order, here are our top 5 flat pedals.
Our choice is based on price and value, grip, looks and durability – for enduro style riding.
In the interests of sanity, these carry a max price point of £100 cos anything over that is completely unnecessary.
No composite pedals allowed, so just proper hard metal pedals for this review.

1. Shimano gr500

Available for £32 from CRC
Previously known as Shimano Saint Flats, these dependable and slim pedals from Shimano offer amazing value with fantastic grip, durability and looks.

At £32 these are by-far the cheapest pedals in this list.
Easy to service with a removable axle and easy to access bearings. 3 Pin lengths for adjustable grip.
The reviewer has spent 2 seasons on this pedal and nothing comes close with the value for money. Make sure you get your pins set up correctly (pins on the outside, longest setting, no pins on the center of the pedal) and they will provide fantastic grip on even flat sole trainers (Vans waffle sole, Adidas flat sole etc…).
Weight is 535g per pair – the heaviest on this review, but reassuringly robust.

  • Unique shape with concave platform for better control and efficiency
  • Extra-wide and especially low profile
  • 3 different pin height settings to match different styles of riding
  • Replaceable pins, screwed in from the back for easy maintenance
  • Extra strong axle

2. DMR V12 Magnesium

Currently Only £40.99 (RRP £75) at Chain Reaction Cycles

The DMR V12 flat pedals have firmly established themselves as the original flat pedal design that has survived the test of time. DMR has now redesigned its best selling platform to be larger for increased foot stability, but slimmer to reduce the weight and ensure better ground clearance. This has been achieved without any compromise on strength or durability, making these pedals the ideal choice for aggressive all-mountain, enduro and downhill riders.

  • Material: Magnesium body, CrMo (cromoly) axle
  • Axle Size: Standard 9/16″ thread
  • Bearing Type: Fully sealed bearings
  • Dimensions: 95x100mm (width x length), 16mm depth
  • Larger Platform Area: 10% more surface area than the classic shape
  • Lower Profile: At just 16mm deep, these pedals are as slim as possible whilst still retaining DMR’s legendary concave feel
  • Lighter Weight: 20% weight saving from the previous model
  • All pins on the pedal are replaceable and tunable for preferred grip
  • Replacement Pins Included: No
  • Weight: 350g per pair

Designed in collaboration with 5-time downhill world champion and three-time Enduro World Series Champion Sam Hill, Nukeproof brings you its Horizon Pro Flat Pedals. Precisely engineered, they give you the ideal balance of fatigue resistance and strength with a minimum weight penalty. These flat mountain bike pedals have a large platform with adjustable pins and angled edges to aid deflection from rock or root strikes.

Prolonged Pedal Life

The Horizon Pro has all the features found on the Horizon Sam Hill. Each pedal body spins on high-quality DU bushings with 2 sealed cartridge bearings to help spread the stress loads from heavy impacts. Meanwhile, a lip seal between the axle end and pedal body helps to reduce ingress of water and dirt prolonging pedal life between services.

  • Material: Forged 6061-T6 Alloy body with CNC finishing
  • Axle: Cro-Mo, standard 9/16″ thread
  • 2 x high quality DU bushings & 4 x sealed cartridge bearings (Per Pair)

4. OneUp Components Alu MTB Pedals

£89 at CRC

Extremely lightweight and extremely grippy. The OneUp pedals ae a slightyl leftfield choice but a firm favorite with both trail riders and enduro riders.

Thye feature a large platform with plenty of pins. The cartridge bearings are a massive upgrade to the DU bushes that many cheaper pedals feature. They come in 7 colourways to match your bike and the bearings don’t allow the pedals to freely spin – great for when your feet come off!

The OneUp Components Flat MTB pedals feature a tough 6061-T6 aluminium construction and a super-wide platform for increased foot stability over the most challenging terrain. They also have a tough CrMo axle to stand up to you landing the biggest jumps and drops. There’s 10 pins on either side for ultimate grip and the pedal’s thin leading edges are tapered to deflect strikes on rocks and tree roots. Fully sealed beatings ensure smooth operation that lasts.

  • Body Material: 6061-T6 Aluminium
  • Axle Material: CrMo
  • Platform Size: 115x105mm
  • Pins: 10 per side
  • Height: 8.3-12mm
  • Pin To Axle Distance: 112mm
  • Contoured shape

5. Brendog Signature Pedals DMR Vault V2

Brendan Fairclough the original flat pedal style for miles rider on the UCI DH circuit. These are his signature pedals and if they are good enough for brendog then they are good enough for you! Gippy as fuck when paired with 510 pedals – no finer or more stylish pedals are available!
We absolutely love these!

DMR Vault V2 Brendog Signature Pedals

The Vault V2 Brendog Signature Pedals are the result of a collaboration with DMR and Brendan “Brendog” Fairclough, one of the most stylish downhill riders on the scene. They offer the same high-quality construction as the standard Vault V2 model, such as the 6061 alloy body and C4130 CrMo Axle but boast a unique colour scheme and Brendog’s decals and signatures.

Wide and Flat Pedals with Reversable Pins

These pedals are ready to take on the biggest jumps and you can be certain that they’ll withstand the landing. They also offer excellent grip, foot stability and clearance, thanks to the 11 pins per pedal, concave-shaped foot bed and thin 17mm profile.

Vitus Mythique VRS Review

Vitus Mythique VRS Review

The 2020 Vitus Mythique VRS is a fantastic value all mountain and trail bike suitable for a multitude of riding. With a great spec list, competent geometry and great performance Vitus horst-link suspension platform providing full active braking, plus a good pedal platform with great climbing and descending properties

We Reviewed the Vitus Mythique VR a while back and found it to be great value at just £999, with spec list that would be perfect for a beginner to intermediate rider wanting to get out on the trails and into weekend mountain biking with mates at trail centers.
After a few dodgy paint jobs in the past the 2020 Vitus lineup looks absolutely amazing and stylish – the military green VRS looks da bomb!
The VRS is currently available at just £1159 – JUST £160 more than the VR – with possibly £500 more in the value of upgraded parts!

The VRS features an additional 10mm of travel over the VR – giving it 140mm both front and rear – more than enough for a trail bike and matching the 140mm on the higher priced Escarpe. The VRS features exactly the same frame design as the VR but with the longer travel X-Fusion Sweep RC forks and the longer stroke X-Fusion 02PRO-R 200 x 56.

Compared to the VS the VRS is coming in with a budget dropper post instead of the standard ridged seat-post of the VR – dropper posts are an essential component of trail riding nowadays and would have been the first upgrade to the VR, so its great to see this on the VRS!
The VRS also comes with a SX Eagle 12 Speed drivetrain – more range than the 10 speed drive of the VR and also comes with a SRAM SX Crankset instead of the Suntour!

We are impressed with the Mythique VR and for just £160 more the Mythique VRS looks absolutely perfect!

The 2020 Vitus Lineup is selling like hot cakes at the moment -especially while CRC are running 20% off the list price. So if you want one, best to snap it up quick before they sell out. Stock is shifting as soon as it gets to CRC or Wiggles warehouse!

British Cycling Membership and Licences

British Cycling Membership and Licences

To be honest, unless your a serious racer and need a race license I never thought it worthwhile to join British Cycling. It seems times are changing and the various levels of BC membership have a number of worthwhile bonuses to help us Mountain Bikers do what we love.

Now I wont bullshit about, some of the Membership benefits are a joke at best, but from only £13.50 a year there seem to be some real benefits that we can all get our hands on.

I will run you through the different membership levels.

Ride membership: £24 a year
They say its ideal for commuters and hobby riders – I think it suits any mountain bike riders who don’t need (or want) a race license.

Benefits include:
Up to £10m third party liability insurance.
Free legal support and advice from the BC legal team.
Save a minimum of 12% at the British Cycling Wiggle shop
Save 10% at Halfords stores nationwide
Pre-sale and discounted tickets to major UK cycle events
Save up to £23 a year on magazines including Cycling Plus, Procycling and Mountain Biking UK (no dirt mag tho :()
Save 40% on AA Membership
Get a free copy of Rouleur and Privateer worth up to £10 each
Save 10% on bike insurance – guaranteed lowest price bike insurance
Save 10% on Cycle Rescue, an emergency roadside recovery service for cyclists

Then they have various race license memberships.
Starting with the Race Bronze membership. This is £13.50 a year and includes most of the benefits of the Ride membership.
The most expensive and comprehensive membership they offer is the Race gold membership which is £64 a year and has the additional benefits of a full racing license and 15% off bike insurance.

If you need a race license or just like the sound of these additional benefits then why not jump on-board with the British authority for bicycle racing. You might even be able to convince them that Downhill mountain bike racing is the premier form of bicycle competition! (which we already know) 😉

Even has time for a trademark whip near the bottom of the course!

No words….

Plus whilst most news agencies have totally ignored DH Mountain Biking once again in favour of reporting on the world rowing champs / mediocre road racing / fly fishing – finally a tiny bit of recognition as the clip makes it onto The Guardian’s (one of the UK’s better newspapers) online edition for Best Sporting video of the week.
