Vitus Mythique VRS Review

Vitus Mythique VRS Review

The 2020 Vitus Mythique VRS is a fantastic value all mountain and trail bike suitable for a multitude of riding. With a great spec list, competent geometry and great performance Vitus horst-link suspension platform providing full active braking, plus a good pedal platform with great climbing and descending properties

We Reviewed the Vitus Mythique VR a while back and found it to be great value at just £999, with spec list that would be perfect for a beginner to intermediate rider wanting to get out on the trails and into weekend mountain biking with mates at trail centers.
After a few dodgy paint jobs in the past the 2020 Vitus lineup looks absolutely amazing and stylish – the military green VRS looks da bomb!
The VRS is currently available at just £1159 – JUST £160 more than the VR – with possibly £500 more in the value of upgraded parts!

The VRS features an additional 10mm of travel over the VR – giving it 140mm both front and rear – more than enough for a trail bike and matching the 140mm on the higher priced Escarpe. The VRS features exactly the same frame design as the VR but with the longer travel X-Fusion Sweep RC forks and the longer stroke X-Fusion 02PRO-R 200 x 56.

Compared to the VS the VRS is coming in with a budget dropper post instead of the standard ridged seat-post of the VR – dropper posts are an essential component of trail riding nowadays and would have been the first upgrade to the VR, so its great to see this on the VRS!
The VRS also comes with a SX Eagle 12 Speed drivetrain – more range than the 10 speed drive of the VR and also comes with a SRAM SX Crankset instead of the Suntour!

We are impressed with the Mythique VR and for just £160 more the Mythique VRS looks absolutely perfect!

The 2020 Vitus Lineup is selling like hot cakes at the moment -especially while CRC are running 20% off the list price. So if you want one, best to snap it up quick before they sell out. Stock is shifting as soon as it gets to CRC or Wiggles warehouse!

Vitus Escarpe VR Review with SRAM NX Eagle

Vitus Escarpe VR Review with SRAM NX Eagle

Well blooming heck, this is a bit tasty isnt it! The Vitus Escarpe VR complete bike available at just £2299 – with a spec list that makes for great reading!
Vitus are Chain Reaction Cycles own ‘budget’ in house brand of bike, and the budget tag isn’t anything to be put off by, because these bikes mean business.
It has no less than 7, 5 star reviews here….

We have ridden countless version of the Escarpe over the past few years and we were very impressed by the competent handling and surprising build quality for such a cheap bike. This 2020 incarnation looks fantastic with its sleek lines and the great suspension platform stays the same.

The Vitus Escarpe VR features some great components at this price point. Nothing on paper will let you down and nothing obvious needs changing straight away, even for the more serious MTBers out there. Even the tyres are great out of the box – usually even around this price point, complete bikes will be lacking in the rubber – but the Maxxis Minion DHF up front is sound and the Rekon rear is a good climber.

The frame offers 140mm of travel, a slight increase on previous years, and should be just great for most styles of riding. The Escarpe is designed to ridden aggressively and can handle the rough stuff well. The 150mm Rock Shox Lyric forks enable you to plough through rocks at speed and although a slight miss match with the rear end, the geo is just right. The Lyric Forks are really top of their game at the mid range market – they offer a lot of adjustability and match well with the rear shock. You wont find a better fork on any bike for under £3k.

Check out that rear shock the RS Deluxe Select + RT, tuned in for the Escarpe platform – loads of adjustably and tokens included – gives a fantastic dialled in ride for both climbing and descending. The 140mm of travel genuinely feels more – having riden both the Sommet and the Escarpe there is not too much difference in the amount of travel both offer – especially when the rear shock is dialed in well, you wont find yourself being left behind on the descents, the Escarpe can handle anything the Sommet can even with 20mm less travel.

We love the expensive SRAM chainset and NX Eagle 12 speed Groupset. The Sram Guide T brakes shouldn’t let you down and are really dependable stoppers – realistically your only worthwhile upgrade would be to Hope E4’s, thats not to say the SRAM Guides are the second best brakes on the market, but you really wont need much more power than these on a trail bike. The Brand X dropper post is a dependable performer, no hassle, no flashing lights and relatively simple to service compared to more expensive models, it will serve you well!

Plus points:
• Great suspension platform with excellent geometry.
• 12 Speed group
• Dialed rear shock and forks.
• Looks amazing.
• Fantastic Value.

Negatives:
• Slightly heavier than expected at nearly 15kg, but still no fatty.
• Slight miss match on front and rear travel, won’t bother most but could prove to be a bit wallowy up front unless you get your suspension set up 100% correctly.
• Brand X dropper comes with mixed reviews, although not seem much better at this price point.
• Has competition from the longer travel Vitus Sommet – and doesn’t out-climb its big brother by much.
• Seat tube on the frame is loooong – make it difficult to get the seat really low for some riders – choose your frame size wisely especailly if you like to get the seat down low!

We think for the money and LOOKS (yummy), this Vitus is in a league of its own.
27.5 wheelsize or 29 wheelsize – you decide!

Wellgo V8 Copy Pedals Review (£5.99)

Wellgo V8 Copy Pedals Review (£5.99)

wellgo pedals

Wellgo V8 Copy Pedals (Long Term Test)

I have used these on my ‘do it all’ trail bike for over 18 months, it gets ridden at least once a week throughout the year. These pedals have never let me down. They offer good grip, good durability and look decent! They are £5.99, yes bloody £5.99!!!!!! So cheap you can buy load of them and fix them to random objects around the home.
Like many people, i loved the shape of the old DMR v8 & v12, these pedals are a direct copy of them. (The new shape DMR v8 & v12 are completely horrendous – so thin that your foot rests on the axle and provides absolutely no grip even with the long pins!)
They have outlived my old Shimano GR500 Saint Pedals by over a year. They have outlived my old DMR v12 pedals by 6 months. They are proper quality and get jet washed all the time (with zero shits given). The pins are nice and long and work well with waffle sole shoes or Adidas. They feel bombproof and reassuringly heavy. Don’t be put off by the reflectors shown in the stock photos, they come off easily with an allen key!
The shape is suitable for a shoe size 11, loads of grip and easy to find the pedal after a dab. Bearings run nicely with a mid pace so wont be spinning around looking to catch a shin. These are really very good and for £6 they are an absolute bargain!!

I have absolutely no idea why anyone would spend £120ish on pedals, an expensive pedal will not make you faster!

Buy Wellgo’s, be happy, save money and spend the money you have saved on something that actually will improve your riding like better tyres, cockpit setup or suspension tuneup!

Planet X Blurb & Specs

The new Planet X Codeine 27.5 has not just been a case of shrinking everything down by a couple of inches We assessed every aspect of the Codeine design to extract the maximum benefit from the new 27.5 wheel size. Its lighter, faster, stiffer and better-looking than previous generations. Weve also increased suspension travel to make it more of an animal – now its a true Enduro monster!

27.5 inch wheels carry less rotating mass than 29ers. This means they turn faster, giving more nimble handling. The Codeine 27.5 is quicker through technical single-track, with a light feel at the bar. The back end is more compact and supremely flickable; a shorter rear triangle tucks the rear wheel up beneath the rider. With more weight over the tyre contact patch theres more traction to power you up the trail, whilst the rear suspension soaks up the lumps without a hint of pedal-induced bob. But its with the nose of the new Codeine pointed downwards that youll notice the biggest change.

Suspension: accepting and ideally suited to 160mm travel forks.

Price now INCLUDES Marzocchi 53 S3C2R rear air shock.

The new Codeine 27.5 is ready help you realise your potential on your local trails. Its a true all-mountain monster that can tackle anything, from steep drags up winding fire roads, to bombing your local Northshore features. One bike to rule them all – youre going to ride this until it hurts, and then ride some more.
